Weekly Jumuah Special: How Remembering Death Can Make You More Productive

لا إله إلا الله

In last week’s Jumuah special I shared some gems of advice on how to deal with stress and worries in Islam. But I excluded one tip— a tip from the Prophet [saws] himself to us, a tip that’s a true stress buster, a wake up call, and a great piece of productivity advice. What is this tip?

Remember more often the destroyer of pleasures— death. [The Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) on the authority of Abu Hurairah]

Looking at the faces of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Gaza, and many more places, as they carry their lifeless children in their arms, begs the question: What is the difference between them and us?

We don’t see and hear ourselves when we are angry, especially when dealing with our kids. We shout, scream, and say things that are considered very mean in an adult world. It’s true that we are tired beyond belief, enraged, and torn apart, but kids only exhaust us because they are so full of energy themselves. Hence, we are unable to keep up. They are hardly responsible for our meltdown, but they tend to pay a price for that as well.

I know most of us mothers can relate to the above scenario except for those who are truly patient. It’s not easy at all, so may Allah multiply their reward in this world and the next as well. Aameen.

I don’t realize the intensity of my behavior until I see someone else doing the same, and immediately I find myself in them. Alhamdulillah! He notifies us before we could…

لا إله إلا الله

Want to maintain a remembrance of Allah (swt)? Perform Zikr! Make your tongue a tireless reminder of His presence.

Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: One of the Companions said, “O Messenger of Allah, there are many injunctions of Islam for me. So tell me something to which I may hold fast.” He said, “Keep your tongue wet with the remembrance of Allah.” [At-Tirmidhi]

How Your Tongue Helps You Remember

If you want to remember Allah (swt) the tongue will help you.

Imagine that you’re walking down the street doing zikr of Allah (swt), for example, you’re saying, “Subhana Allah, subhana Allah, subhana Allah . . .” A new car passes by. Your eyes are attracted to the car and your brain goes with the car. You even forget you’re doing zikr!

But if you keep doing zikr with your tongue your brain will…
