Being understanding of the variety of hearts Allaah azza wajal has created.

“On the journey towards piety, sometimes you have to be strong. Extremely strong.

– Strong against your desires, your whims, your nafs.
– Strong as in tough.
– Strong as in strict. Strong as in certain.

But sometimes being strong means being flexible, being tolerant, being understanding and kind.

Because, let’s be honest, it requires much more strength to be the latter things than the former.

Being patient with others, being merciful, being forgiving…
Being flexible with varying situations and differing opinions…
Being understanding of the variety of hearts Allaah azza wajal has created.

That is what requires true strength and that is how one achieves piety.

Sometimes, we have to be harsh – but when we look into the sunnah, we will find the Messenger was more kind and forgiving than he was harsh, he found more excuses for sinners than he gave punishments, he cried more out of compassion than he acted on frustration.

It is his kindness, his sincerity, his tolerance, his understanding, his wisdom, his forgiving nature that makes us look up to him and want to be like him.

These are traits of a pious person. This is true strength.”
