The Sunnah Upon Eating
Upon Eating Is The Sunnah Saying ‘Bismillahi Rahmani Rahem’, Or Just ‘Bismillah’? ❤
On the authority of ‘Aishah radiyAllahu ‘anha she said:
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said if any amongst you eat then let them mention the name of Allah the Most High [upon commencing] and if he forgets to mention the name of Allah the Most High in the beginning then let him say Bismillah awalahu wa aakhirahu.
[Reported by Aboo Dawuud Kitaab al-at’imah no. 3767 and Tirmidhee Kitaab al-at’imah no. 1858]
Shaykh al-Albaanee – may Allah have mercy upon him – said clarifying the wording that should be used when starting to eat:
In the hadeeth there is daleel [evidence] that the Sunnah when eating is to only say bismillah. As for Imaam Nawawee’s statment in [his book] al-Athkaar [in the chapter Manners regarding eating]
The way to mention Allahs name [correctly] is from amongst the most important things to know, and what is best is to say, ‘bismillaahi Rahmaani Raheem’ and if he says ‘bismillah’ then that is sufficient and he has accomplished the Sunnah thereby.
Then I [Shaykh al-Albaanee] have not seen what he mentions regarding superiority [i.e that bismillahi Rahmani Rahem is preferd above just simply saying bismillah] any specific daleel [evidence]
And I [Shaykh al-Albaanee] say there is nothing to be prefered above the Sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and
the best of guidance is his guidance, so if it cannot be authentically established that upon eating you say anything other then bismillah alone,
then it is not allowed to increase [even if it is bismillahi Rahmani Rahem] and even less so that this increase then becomes better then the original Sunnah [is not possible], because saying this is in contrast with that which we have pointed towards in the hadeeth.
And the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)
