Last night charity was given to a thief ?

The beauty of Sadaqah!.. ❤

On the authority of Aboo Hurairah – radiyallaah ‘anhu – that the Messenger of Allaah – sallallaahu ‘alyhi wasallam – said:

“(Once upon a time) a man said, ‘I will surely give in charity!’

So he went outside with the charity he wished to give, and placed it in the hands of a thief.

The following morning people started talking about what had happened, saying ‘Last night charity was given to a thief!?’

Whereupon the man said ‘All praise is due to You O Allaah for (giving me the opportunity to give charity to) a thief.

And then he said once more ‘I will surely give in charity!’ this time placing his charity in the hands of a prostitute.

The people started talking next morning saying ‘Last night charity was given to a prostitute!?’

Whereupon the man said ‘All praise is due to You O Allaah for (giving me the opportunity to give charity to) a prostitute.’

And he said a third time, ‘I will surely give in charity!’ and he placed his charity in the hands of a wealthy man.

The next day people started talking again and said ‘Last night charity was given to a wealthy man!?’

Then the man said ‘All praise is due to You O Allaah for (giving me the opportunity to give charity to) a thief, a prostitute and a wealthy man.’

It was then said to him;

‘As for your charity
– you gave to the thief perhaps this will stop him from stealing
– (i.e. give him a means not to steal anymore) and

– as for the prostitute perhaps
– it will stop her from committing illegal sexual intercourse and

– as for the wealthy man perhaps it will serve as a reminder for him and
– lead him to spend from that which Allaah has given him.’”

[Saheeh at-Targheeb v. 1 p. 113]

MORAL OF THE STORY: Never belittle any good deed and remember everything is based upon ones intentions.
